Here there is an interesting article regarding Passive Sensors using RF BackScatter,

this could be another approach to the problem of low power in wireless sensor networks, what do you think about it ??
My opinion is that it is not adaptable to the concept of a wireless sensor network where the all the actors are low power, in this case infact only the sensor is zero-power while the reader must illuminate it and so it's really power hungry
